Description
Details
- Palm wine tapper with calabash tied to the back and front of the bike, with rope hooped around his neck to climb the palm tree; dressed in a tunic top, trousers and raffia hat.
- African couple dressed up in traditional attire for a party. The woman seated elegantly on a bike is dressed in a traditional Yoruba Iro and buba (top and wrapper tied around her waist) and gele (big scarf on her head), paired with slippers, a box bag and red coral bead. On her back, she has their baby wrapped in a wrapper (material).
The man riding the bike is dressed in a traditional Yoruba Ofi Danshiki (top and bottom) and Abeti Aja Fila (dog ears hat) with red coral beads around the neck and wrist and a pair of shoes.
The bike is welded and finished with bolts to show the details of the bike. The sculpture has a rough surface finish adding to the rawness of the metal that was used to craft it.
In colonial times, bikes were the fastest means of transportation in Nigeria. Back then, owning a bike was a level of wealth most people could not afford, and so many would walk bare feet for miles and days commuting to markets, villages and towns to see relatives, buy and sell. Men often owned bikes; therefore, seeing a woman who had access to bikes was a rare occasion.
